What OCR does
OCR in Paperspell turns photos and PDFs of your documents into clean, searchable text. You point the camera at a letter, contract, or form, and Paperspell straightens the page, improves contrast, recognises the text, and attaches it to the original file as a searchable layer.
The same OCR engine powers Fast search, summaries, translation, and reminders: names, dates, addresses, amounts, and deadlines are extracted from scans, so you can later type just a few words and immediately jump to the right page. It works across multiple languages (for example German plus your native language in the same archive) and keeps both the original image and the recognised text safely stored in one place.
Where it helps most
- Paper letters from authorities, insurers, banks, and landlords that you still receive by post.
- Contracts, policies, and rental agreements that you want to search and quote later.
- Mixed paper/PDF archives where some documents come as scans, others as downloaded files.
- Documents in a foreign language where you need both the original and digital text for translation.
Pro tips
- Scan in good light and keep the whole page in frame to improve OCR accuracy.
- Use Batch mode for multi-page letters; Paperspell will run OCR on all pages in one go.
- After scanning, give the document a clear title and tags so search and reminders stay precise.
- For important contracts, scan both sides and any annexes – OCR will index everything together.
